Challenges
1. Overwhelming & cluttered UI in existing apps Users often felt mentally overloaded by dense text, too many options, or emotional overload screens—making reflection feel like a task rather than a relief. 2. Generic and repetitive insights Most apps provided surface-level insights that users couldn’t act on, leading to low engagement and distrust toward the app’s usefulness. 3. Difficulty maintaining consistency in journaling Users struggled to journal regularly due to time constraints, uncertainty on what to write, or lack of meaningful prompts. 4. Emotionally flat or robotic AI interaction Users expected support and empathy, but chat-based apps often felt scripted, emotionless, or too “therapeutic” without personalization.
Solutions
1. Users felt overwhelmed by cluttered or text-heavy interfaces. Solution: Designed a calm, minimal UI with clear hierarchy, soft color palette, and progressive disclosure to reduce cognitive load and make reflection feel effortless. 2. Existing apps provided generic insights that users found unhelpful. Solution: Built an AI-driven insight engine that analyzes mood trends, journaling patterns, and emotional triggers to generate personalized, actionable recommendations. 3. Users struggled to maintain journaling consistency. Solution: Added dual journaling pathways—manual entry for reflective writing and AI-assisted summaries for quick check-ins based on chat + mood inputs. Streaks, prompts, and gentle reminders support habit formation. 4. Emotional support often felt robotic or impersonal. Solution: Introduced an emotion-aware conversational tone, empathetic micro-copy, and a “Talk to IWA” mode that adapts responses based on mood intensity and context.
Result
After iterating through usability testing: 92% of testers found the interface easier to navigate compared to their current mental-wellness apps. 8/10 users preferred AI-assisted journaling over manual-only modes. Users reported feeling “calmer,” “more supported,” and “less overwhelmed” during their interactions with the app. The final design successfully reduced friction, improved emotional connection, and delivered meaningful insights users said they could “actually use in daily life.”
